U-Haul U-Box loading and unloading: movers for the container in your driveway
A U-Box is U-Haul's portable storage container: it turns up empty, you fill it, and it gets hauled to wherever it's going next. The filling is a labor job and it isn't part of the container rental, which is why people go looking for movers separately. Lugg is an on-demand moving and delivery platform where you book local movers to load and unload portable storage containers with Movers only, same day, for anyone who's already got the container and needs the lifting done.
What is a U-Box, and who loads it?
It's a container U-Haul delivers to your address and collects when you're done, sized for part of a home rather than a whole truckload. The loading is yours to arrange, and that's the part Lugg does. Type in your address, tap Movers only, pick your crew size, and movers can be on the way in as little as an hour, or scheduled up to 60 days in advance. If U-Haul's delivery slips, you can move the booking to another day, any time before the crew is dispatched.
No two-hour minimum on a U-Box load
U-Haul's own Moving Help marketplace books labor in blocks: two hours minimum, ten maximum, and unused hours aren't refunded if the crew finishes early. Lugg bills labor by the minute with no minimum at all, so a U-Box that takes fifty minutes to load pays for fifty minutes of labor. If it runs longer than you planned, the crew keeps working at the same per-minute rate.
Where your U-Box actually is
U-Haul gives you three ways to get one, and each changes how you book. If it's delivered to your place, the container and your things are at the same address, so book Movers only there. If you towed it home on U-Haul's trailer, same thing. If you're packing it at a U-Haul location instead, your things have to travel to the lot, so book a standard Lugg from your home to the U-Haul location, which comes with the vehicle.
Loading at one end, unloading at the other
A container gets filled in one place and emptied in another, so it's normally two Luggs rather than one, booked whenever each end actually happens. Load it before U-Haul comes to collect it. Book the unload once it's been delivered to the new address, which might be weeks later and a long way from the first crew.

FAQs - U-Box container loads
Anything that stays at one address. Customers book Movers only to:
- Load or unload a rental truck, a moving container or a storage unit.
- Set up and break down tables, chairs and decor for parties and events.
- Rearrange furniture within a home or office.
- Move something heavy, like a treadmill, a safe or a sleeper sofa, to a different room or floor.
- Move furniture out before the floors get refinished, then back in once they're dry.
- Clear out a garage or basement before a remodel.
- Stage a home before a showing, or reconfigure an office.
It also works between two buildings in the same complex, as long as your movers can carry everything over without a truck. If your things need to ride in a vehicle to get there, book a standard Lugg and your movers bring the vehicle.
Book Movers only, Lugg's option for jobs that stay at one address. Enter your address, tap Movers only underneath it, then pick your crew size and a time. If you type the same address as both your pickup and your drop-off, the app suggests Movers only for you. There's no truck to book, and you'll see your upfront estimate before you confirm.
The clock starts when the crew arrives at your address and stops when the last thing you asked for is done. Lugg bills that time by the minute with no minimum, so a 40-minute job costs 40 minutes. If the work finishes faster than you planned you only pay for what you used, and if it runs longer the crew can keep working at the same per-minute rate.
You don't book a block of time, so it helps to have a rough idea of what jobs take:
- Rearranging furniture: moving a few heavy items within your home usually takes about an hour.
- Loading or unloading a truck or pod: 2–3 hours for a studio or one-bedroom, 3–5 hours for a two- or three-bedroom home.
- Event setup: varies a lot, but an hour or two covers most table, chair and decor setups.
The estimator in the Lugg app or on lugg.com works out an estimated cost from the crew size you pick and the time you expect.
Yes, single-item jobs are one of the most common reasons people book Movers only. A sleeper sofa that has to go upstairs, a treadmill that has to get down to the basement, a safe that needs to move one room over: all of them are hard or unsafe to do alone. And because labor is billed by the minute with no hourly minimum, a fifteen-minute job pays for fifteen minutes of labor on top of the base fare.
After you tap Movers only, the Crew screen asks you to pick 1 Lugger or 2 Luggers. 1 Lugger has the lower base fare and the lower per-minute labor rate, and suits a job one person can handle, like carrying boxes or moving lighter furniture. Pick 2 Luggers for anything that takes two people to carry, like a sofa, a dresser or a washer.
Weight is the other thing to check. Lugg's weight limit is 125 lbs per Lugger, or 250 lbs per item when you pick 2 Luggers.
If the job needs a bigger crew than that, book a second Movers only Lugg at the same address for the same time window. Each booking has its own base fare and per-minute labor, and Movers only has no mileage fee.
Even on a Movers only job, your Luggers arrive with their own equipment: a dolly, moving blankets, stretch wrap, tie-down straps, forearm lifting straps, and a basic toolkit for light disassembly and reassembly. For a job where the crew both loads and unloads, you don't need to supply anything.
They work to avoid marking floors, walls and elevators, and they're used to getting heavy furniture and appliances through tight doorways, up stairs and around landings.
Yes, Luggers load and unload rental trucks, PODS containers and storage units every day. They know how to pack a load so it uses the space it has and doesn't shift on the drive — heavy pieces low and flat against the walls, padding between anything that can rub.
One thing to plan for when the crew is loading but not unloading: their moving blankets are their own equipment and go back with them at the end of the job. If you want your furniture padded for the drive, or for a few months in storage, have your own blankets ready and the crew will use those. They'll bring stretch wrap either way, and anything loose should be boxed and taped before they arrive.
No, Lugg does not provide packing or unpacking services. On a Movers only job, Luggers handle the heavy lifting: carrying, loading and unloading, placing furniture where you want it, and basic assembly and disassembly. Have loose items like dishes, books and clothes boxed and taped before the crew arrives, since Lugg doesn't supply boxes or packing materials. Because labor is billed by the minute, having everything ready to go is also the cheapest way to book.
