Call your local one before you plan on it, because their crew can still decline something at the door if it turns up damaged or below their standards, and what one center takes doesn't mean another will.
This is the question people actually search: will they take the heavy thing? A charity crew works to its own limits on weight, stairs and condition, and a sleeper sofa on a third floor is where a free pickup most often turns into a no.
